Swing Pedestal Concept


The swinging pedestal is a very smart solution in creating a multiple steering position with the minimum in space lost in the cockpit. The pedestal can swing from port to starboard and can be fixed in three positions. As shown in above illustration, a swing pedestal with a 800 mm wheel can simulate a 2500 mm wheel. 

The conventional way of steering a typical 45' and bigger race/cruising yacht would be to use a twin pedestal configuration as shown in orange in the above illustration. The downside of this solution is the lost space in the cockpit, the narrow passage between the wheels and the complicated steering mechanics under deck.

The under deck solution for the swinging pedestal is much easier as twin wheel steered systems. The above illustration shows a typical cable system solution.

The WP900 pedestal solution is completely made of high strength aluminium 6082. Due to this build method, the weight is relatively low with 19 Kgs and the construction is very strong and stiff. The WP900 swing mechanism is easy to operate by foot pedal. The pedal switch only has to be opened by foot and will click in the next position when reached. Please click on the pictures for a larger view.
The under deck

The WP900 pedestal is equipped with a water drain. All the bearings in the central shaft are made of stainless 316 and proper PUR seals are fitted to guarantee no water will enter the boat. Different sprockets can be mounted on the central shaft. Please click on the picture for a larger view.

integrated steering disengagement unit:
Jefa Steering has developed a disengagement steering unit to be used in all Jefa WP700-WP900 cable steering pedestals (using the BS25 steerer). As most boats nowadays are equipped with twin wheel steering, the helmsman experiences an echo of the inertia of the non-used wheel. When sailing on autopilot, both wheels have to be speeded up and down continuously causing a high power consumption and wear. The ideal solution would be if the wheel could be easily disengaged from the mechanical steering system by the helmsman. The Jefa integral disengagement steering unit offers an unique solution.   Disengagement units in the steering wheel hubs do exists, but at very high costs and causing the steering wheel hub to be very bulky so only usable on big stainless steel double spoked wheels. Modern boats use smaller (twin)  wheels made of aluminium, carbon or GRP. Disengagement units for these modern wheels don’t exist on this moment.

What makes the Jefa integrated disengagement steering unit unique and an absolute innovation?

  1. Easy and safe to operate by simply rotating the brake knob of the steering system.
  2. The disengagement unit is fully invisible as it is integrated in the steering pedestal.
