The WP800 pedestal solution is Jefa's answer to the demand for a strong, light and affordable pedestal for the growing number of twin wheel steered boats. The pedestal is completely made of high strength aluminium 6082. To protect the pedestal against the tough environment it’s alochromed (chromate conversion coating) and after that powder coated resulting in an long lasting finish. This build method results in a relatively low weight (5.5 Kgs) and a very strong, stiff and durable construction. Due to a very flexible build method, the pedestal angle and height are variable. Please click on the pictures for a larger view.

Some installation examples:


These illustrations shows the most common under deck situation on twin wheel steered boats with one rudder.
The linkage between both pedestals is achieved via flat sheaves and articulated sheaves are used to link to the quadrant.


Installation using a traverse:


This illustrations shows an optimised solution for production boats. The (gray) traverse combines all sheaves, rudder stop and autopilot drive system. The mounting of this system is extremely quick and simple as the pedestals bolts have matching holes in the traverse, so with tightening 8 bolts, the complete steering system including pedestals in installed. The autopilot drive is very easy to integrate by replacing one of the sheaves by a sprocket with a shaft and autopilot flange. Fitting the autopilot drive is also just tightening 4 bolts. Installation using custom cross wire idlers:


This illustrations shows an optimised solution for production boats when the rudder is too far away to use a traverse. The sheaves on the idler can be rotated to align to the quadrant. The mounting of this system is extremely quick and simple as the pedestals bolts have matching holes in the idlers, so with tightening 8 bolts, the complete steering system including pedestals in installed. Adding a guardrail and instruments to the WP800 pedestal:


The WP800 pedestal can be completed with a Ψ32 mm - 305 mm centres stainless steel 316 guardrail and various instrument housings. The unit can be delivered with different guardrail feet. The WP800 guardrail feet secure the guardrail firmly to the cockpit floor and also provide a watertight solution when cables have to go through the cockpit floor. The only part visible from the outside is a 5 mm high, 40 mm diameter black ring as the top of the guardrail foot is inserted into the stainless steel tube. A 3 mm O-ring makes sure no water will enter from outside. Jefa steering produces 3 types of guardrail feet. Type 1 is supplied when no penetration of the cockpit floor is required. Type 2 is supplied when instrument cables have to go through the cockpit floor with a maximum thickness off 45 mm. Type 3 is supplied when engine control or instrument cables have to go through the cockpit floor with a maximum thickness off 95 mm.

integrated steering disengagement unit:
Jefa Steering has developed a disengagement steering unit to be used in all Jefa WP700-WP900 cable steering pedestals (using the BS25 steerer). As most boats nowadays are equipped with twin wheel steering, the helmsman experiences an echo of the inertia of the non-used wheel. When sailing on autopilot, both wheels have to be speeded up and down continuously causing a high power consumption and wear. The ideal solution would be if the wheel could be easily disengaged from the mechanical steering system by the helmsman. The Jefa integral disengagement steering unit offers an unique solution.   Disengagement units in the steering wheel hubs do exists, but at very high costs and causing the steering wheel hub to be very bulky so only usable on big stainless steel double spoked wheels. Modern boats use smaller (twin)  wheels made of aluminium, carbon or GRP. Disengagement units for these modern wheels don’t exist on this moment.

What makes the Jefa integrated disengagement steering unit unique and an absolute innovation?

  1. Easy and safe to operate by simply rotating the brake knob of the steering system.
  2. The disengagement unit is fully invisible as it is integrated in the steering pedestal.
  3. Excellent styling as no parts, levers or mini wheels are sticking out of the wheel hub area.
